Kiss me quick

I remember going to Blackpool as a child, the scent of the sea mixed with fish and chips greeting me after a long drive, the bright lights and colourful sweets sending me into a frenzy of excitement, children laughing and toys that glowed and spun, it felt happy, fun and free.

Everything was seen through such innocent eyes, everything then, was simple and beautiful. Returning now, it has changed, that innocent lost.

I am not here for the bright lights and the rides.

This time my eyes see a different Blackpool; I walk around judging and scrutinising it; the things that once excited me now feel dirty, dark, and sleazy.

I hear the laughter and fun of the drunken youth, the air filled with a heavy smell of fried food that revolts me.

I’m tense now, anxious, but is that the city or me?

I judge this city; what gives me the right?

I’m the one walking to a place far more sinful.
